The sex of a juvenile sea turtle, such as this loggerhead, is determined by the temperature of the sand in which the eggs are layed. It is believed that lower temperatures produce males, while higher temperatures tend to produce females. Using an egg tooth on the tip of their beak they are able to break free from their egg and crawl out of the sand before scurrying to the ocean.
