Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are ovoviviparous, with a 5 to 6-month gestation period during which embryos develop in egg cases inside the mother’s body. They give birth to 20-50 fully developed pups in shallow, protected areas like mangroves and coral reefs. This one-foot baby nurse shark was photoghraphed near the surface in over 500 feet of water at night. Learn more about nurse sharks.
