Florida manatees typically inhabit shallow rivers, bays, estuaries, and coastal waters. During the winter months, they seek refuge in warm-water such as the springs in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. This behavior helps them escape cold temperatures, as prolonged exposure to temperatures below 50°F (10°C) can be life-threatening. Temperatures between 50°F and 68°F can cause stress and discomfort, prompting manatees to congregate in warmer areas.
