Corals and sponges must compete for space on the ocean floor. Numerous methods include the use of chemical warfare to kill nearby corals, or shadowing its neighbor to starve them of sunlight. The introduction of invasive species of corals, such as the orange cup corals in this photograph, can overrun large areas of the coral reef.
