African pompano larval at night

African pompano: Alectis ciliaris, Bony Fishes: Osteichthyes, Fishes, Jacks: Carangidae, MARINE LIFE, MORE KEYWORDS, West Palm Beach, [LOCATION], baby, blue, horizontal, juvenile, larva, larvae, larval, larval stage, less than 1 inch, marine, ocean, silver, underwater, underwater photo, vertical

Some of the larval fish I encounter during my blackwater night dives, such as this African pompano, display large elaborate fin rays. Some extend over ten times the length of their body. The reason for this elaborate fin display is unknown, but my best guess is that it serves as a distraction for predators who are likely to strike at the fins instead of the larval’s body.
