World’s smallest whale

No, you are not looking at the world’s smallest whale. This is a full grown humpback whale. While swimming with humpbacks in the Kingdom of Tonga, I took this photograph with a telephoto lens. The miniaturization effect was caused by an out of focus wave in the foreground filling most of the bottom of the frame — an effect typically achieved only with a tilt-shift wideangle camera lens. I love the photo’s serendipitous symbolism — even the mightiest of all creatures seems insignificant in the expanse of the Earth.
