Sponges are an important component of the coral reef ecosystem. They filter large amounts of water and serve as habitat and food for other invertebrates. Some sponges, such as this giant barrel sponge (Xestospongia muta), are one of the oldest animal on Earth. One particular giant barrel sponge discovered in Curacao in 1997 was estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Sadly, in the year 2000, this sponge died. Sponges are susceptible to bleaching as well as damage from anchors and fishing tackle gear. The sponge in the picture is around 40-60 years old. Learn more about one of the oldest animal on Earth.
